Service Description

The professions of sworn interpreter and authorized translator are regulated.

The profession of sworn interpreter entitles to oral language interpretation for judicial, prosecutorial and notarial purposes. The profession of authorized translator entitles to written language translation for judicial, prosecutorial and notarial purposes. The corresponding language is German. An activity as a general sworn interpreter or as an authorized translator can only be exercised after the general swearing-in or after the authorization by the competent president of the regional court. Recognition of a foreign qualification is not required for the general swearing-in as an interpreter or for the authorization as a translator.

Anyone who has the necessary personal reliability and professional aptitude can be sworn in as an interpreter and authorized as a translator. Personal reliability shall not be deemed to exist in particular if the applicant has been sentenced by a court or other measure resulting in his/her unsuitability as a sworn interpreter or authorized translator, or if the applicant lives in a disorderly financial situation. The professional suitability is to be proven by a certificate of successful completion of interpreting or translating studies at a university or a certificate of a passed state or state-recognized interpreting or translating examination.
