Apply for Aufstiegs-BAföG

Service Description

With the Upgrading Training Assistance Act (Aufstiegs-BAföG) under the Upgrading Training Assistance Act (Aufstiegsfortbildungsförderungsgesetz, AFBG), the federal and state governments provide financial support for participation in vocational upgrading training measures run by public and private institutions, e.g. to become a master craftsman, technician, business administrator or state-certified educator, by contributing to the cost of the course (measure contribution). In the case of full-time measures, income- and asset-related funding is also possible through contributions to living expenses (maintenance contribution).

You are entitled to the subsidy if you meet the legal requirements.

The subsidy includes government grants that do not have to be repaid. In addition, you have the option of receiving a low-interest loan from the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). This loan can be used to cover the difference between the government subsidies and the maximum subsidy amount.

With the Aufstiegs-BAföG, the following are subsidized independent of income

  • the course costs,
  • the examination fees and
  • the material costs for a master craftsman's examination project.

In the case of full-time measures, living expenses are also subsidized, depending on income.

Under certain conditions, you can claim the subsidy up to three times.
