Official feed monitoring is part of consumer health protection. The Thuringian State Office for Agriculture and Rural Areas is responsible for the target- and risk-oriented monitoring of feed business operators' compliance with the extensive regulations of feed law. Producers, manufacturers and trading companies of all types of feed are monitored.

The production and feeding of safe feed is a prerequisite:

• for the production of safe and high-quality animal food,
• for the health of the animals
• for the prevention of hazards to the natural environment.

Feed business operators have a responsibility to ensure that the feed they produce, manufacture and supply is safe.

The safety of feed for animals and the food derived from it is verified mainly by means of farm audits, sampling with subsequent laboratory tests - mainly for undesirable and prohibited substances -, labeling controls and feed traceability measures at all stages of production.
