If a vehicle that is not registered in Germany is to be taken abroad permanently under its own power, an export license plate must be applied for from a vehicle registration authority.

The prerequisite for this is a valid general inspection and proof of existing motor vehicle liability insurance.

The vehicle must be presented for an identity check.

The export license is limited to a maximum of one year.

The expiration date is noted on the license plate and in the registration certificate part I.

The registration certificate must be carried on every journey.
