Register apartment

Service Description

Anyone moving into an apartment must register within two weeks.

Late registration due to exceeding the registration deadline of two weeks can be punished with a fine.
In addition, violations of the obligation to register result in problems with vehicle registration, obtaining a driver's license or applying for a certificate of good conduct.

The person obliged to register can be represented by a person when submitting the registration form by presenting the required documents (registration documents and power of attorney). This means that one family member can register or re-register all the others. The presentation of a power of attorney is sufficient if it covers matters of registration law or the right of residence.

If you are under the age of 16, registration is the responsibility of the person into whose home you are moving. Newborns born in Germany are only to be registered if they are taken into a dwelling other than that of their parents or mother. If you are of age and a guardian or custodian has been appointed for you, who can determine the residence, the registration is incumbent on him/her.

If you have several residences in Germany, one of these residences is your main residence. Each time you register, you must inform the registration office which other apartments you have in Germany and which of these apartments is your main apartment.

Main residence is:

  • if you are married or living in a civil partnership: the dwelling predominantly used by the family or the civil partnership. This also applies if you are only temporarily living apart from your family or civil partner.
  • if you are married or in a civil partnership and live permanently separated: Your predominantly used home.
  • if you are a minor: the predominantly used home of your parents or foster parents. If they live separately, the main residence is the residence in which you mainly live.
  • Only if the predominantly used dwelling cannot be determined beyond doubt, the focus of the living relations is to be taken into account. This may be indicated by the type of dwelling, personal ties, social and local political activities, and membership in clubs and other organizations.

Persons who have their usual place of residence abroad and are not registered in Germany do not have to register until after three months.

Those who are currently registered for an apartment in Germany and move into another apartment for no longer than six months do not have to register for this apartment. Only after the expiration of six months, a registration must take place.
