Recognize foreign professional qualifications in the field of continuing education in the health professions
Service Description
Activities in the area of continuing education in the health care professions are regulated in Germany. This means that you may only use a continuing education title if you are formally authorized to do so. To obtain this authorization, your foreign qualification must be recognized.
The following continuing education courses in the health professions are regulated in Thuringia:
- Practice supervisor
- Responsible nursing specialist according to § 71 SGB XI
- Head nurse of an area in the hospital and other nursing care areas
- Specialist nurse for geriatrics and gerontopsychiatry
- Hygiene specialist
- Hygiene representative in nursing facilities
- Nursing specialist in palliative care
Process flow
Your foreign professional qualification can be recognized upon application. However, you must intend to work in Thuringia. In the procedure, your foreign professional qualification is compared with a German reference qualification (further education qualification). The competent body checks whether there are any significant differences between your foreign professional qualification and the German further education qualification.
If the examination is positive, you will receive a certificate of equivalence. If there are significant differences between your foreign professional qualification and the German continuing education qualification, you have the option of taking an adaptation measure (aptitude test or adaptation course) to achieve equivalence.
You can choose between two options:
- Adaptation course: the adaptation course is a practical post-qualification, which means a course, a seminar or an internship. Often a course or seminar is combined with an internship. The duration of the adaptation course depends on the identified differences between your foreign qualification and the German qualification.
- Aptitude test: An aptitude test is a test in which they check your aptitude for further education. An aptitude test is not a new final examination. In the aptitude test, only the deficits that were identified in your training are tested.
Once the equivalence has been determined or after successful completion of an adaptation measure, you can apply for permission to use the continuing education designation(s). Permission will be granted if you can prove that you have been granted permission to use the professional title in a legally regulated specialist occupation in the health and social services sector (basic occupation) and that you have the language skills required for the occupation.
With the permission to use the continuing education title, you are legally treated in the same way as persons with a corresponding German continuing education degree.
With the recognition of your basic profession, you can also work in a health care profession without additional recognition of your qualification as a continuing education degree. However, you will then not be able to work in the continuing education field and will not be allowed to use the continuing education designation.
German language skills at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages are currently recommended for practicing the profession.
In professions that require a state permit to practice, the recognition procedure can also be carried out via the technical systems of the point of single contact as of January 18, 2016.
