Highly radioactive sources Registration

Service Description

You must report the delivery, acquisition, other whereabouts, and leak tests of highly radioactive sources to the HRQ Registry.

In Germany, highly radioactive sources are used in industry and commerce, medicine, research and agriculture. Areas of application in industry are, for example, the calibration of measuring instruments. In medicine, radiation sources are used, among other things, in radiation therapy.

Since 2005, there have been legal regulations in Germany for the control of "highly radioactive sources" (HRQ), i.e. radiation sources whose activity is so high that misuse can be associated with a high level of danger.

You must notify the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) via the HRQ register of the delivery, acquisition, other whereabouts and the performance of leak tests of a highly radioactive source.

No notification to the HRQ register is required for the handling of sources whose activity is below the level for high-level radioactive sources.

The HRQ Registry enables complete tracking of the whereabouts of highly radioactive sources within Germany. Registration takes place in secure electronic form via an Internet platform of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection.
