Sheep-goat premium
Service Description
Livestock farmers who manage biotope grassland in Thuringia can receive support through the sheep-goat premium. Sheep and goats are important "landscape managers on four legs". Through grazing, valuable open land habitats are preserved for animals and plants. The sheep-goat premium is intended to help counteract the decline in sheep and goat populations in Thuringia.
The sheep-goat premium can be applied for from 2019 to 2021.
Process flow
Applications can be submitted annually until 31.03.
Important information, application documents and forms can be found here:
https://umwelt.thueringen.de/themen/natur-artenschutz/foerderung/
There are two different application forms:
- an application form for farmers and agricultural enterprises (participants in IACS) and
- a form for private livestock farmers (not participants in IACS).
If you meet the requirements of the sheep-goat premium, you will receive a grant notice with information on the payment procedure.
The sheep-goat premium will be paid in the years 2019 to 2021.

Requirements
If you keep at least 20 sheep and/or goats, you can apply.
Your animals must:
- Be over nine months old by the January 3 cutoff date,
- be kept on your farm from April 1 to at least September 15 (keeping period),
- graze on your grassland in Thuringia during the grazing season. Animals that are kept indoors all year round are excluded from the subsidy.
The premium is only granted to livestock farmers whose Thuringian grassland areas have at least 10 % of their land in the setts for biotope grassland. Biotope grassland is defined as all areas that are located in a set for which an application for KULAP G2-G6 is possible. An actual KULAP application of the areas is not required for the proof as biotope grassland. You can find out from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority whether your areas are within the backdrop for biotope grassland.
