As a rule, the originals of all the certificates and documents listed below must be presented for certification at the registry office. Foreign documents must always be translated by an interpreter authorized in Germany. In special cases, further documents may be required.

• Identity documents of mother and father (identity card or passport)
• Parents who are married to each other
  • Marriage certificate
  • Birth certificates of both parents
• Parents who are not married to each other:
  • Birth certificates of both parents
  • Acknowledgement of paternity (if already made prenatally) and, if applicable, declaration of custody

If the marital status of the mother is "divorced" or "widowed", the marriage certificate of the dissolved marriage as well as the proof of the divorce of the marriage (final judgment) or the death certificate of the spouse must be submitted additionally

The following documents are required to report the birth of a child:

• in the case of parents who are married to each other, their birth certificates and the marriage certificate or a certified copy from the marriage register
• in the case of parents who are not married to each other, the mother's birth certificate and, if paternity has already been acknowledged, the declarations concerning this and the father's birth certificate as well as, if applicable, the custody declarations
• a valid identity card, passport or other recognized passport substitute document of the parents,
• in the case of oral notification, a certificate of birth issued by a physician or midwife or maternity nurse,
• If the marriage of the parents has been dissolved by the death of the husband, documentary evidence of this.
