Theaim of landscape conservation is the preservation and development of the landscape with its diversity and characteristics, its habitats as well as its habitats of wild, native animal and plant species and their biotic communities (see also Section 1 (2) to (4) of the Federal Nature Conservation Act).

The field of activity includes, in particular, measures for the maintenance, development, restoration and new creation of near-natural habitats as well as habitats of native animal and plant species, their biotope network as well as historical cultural landscapes and parts of the landscape. Endangered species and habitats as well as measures in protected areas according to nature conservation law are focal points of landscape conservation. The Free State of Thuringia primarily pursues a cooperative approach in the implementation of the measures: The aim is to secure the maintenance of valuable habitats through contractual agreements between owners or authorized users and the nature conservation administration (contractual nature conservation). Restoration and new creation is primarily supported through project funding.
