Military and civilian service: maintenance assurance

Service Description

To meet their basic needs, conscripted military or civilian service members and their family members receive benefits under the Maintenance Act (Unterhaltssicherungsgesetz, USG). These benefits include

  • reimbursement of insurance premiums (except life insurance and insurance related to keeping and driving a motor vehicle),
  • Rent allowance or economic allowance for self-employed persons.

The draft notice establishes the military/civilian service relationship on the date of commencement of service specified therein. From this point on, benefits under the USG are granted for a maximum period of nine months of military or civilian service, provided that the respective conditions of entitlement are met.

With the exception of the bridging allowance, these benefits are also granted if the conscript performs voluntary additional military service following basic military service (Section 2 No. 1 USG).
