§ 18 ThürSchulG

1. Full-time compulsory education begins on August 1 of the same year for all children who are six years old on August 1 of that year.
2. A child who is at least five years old on June 30 may be admitted to school early on August 1 of the same year upon application by the parents. The decision is made by the principal in consultation with the school physician. Compulsory school attendance begins upon admission.
3. In exceptional cases, a child of compulsory school age may be deferred from school attendance once for one year at the request of the parents if, due to a medical indication, the prerequisites for successful school learning are not yet met. The decision is made by the principal, in particular on the basis of the school medical examination. The period of deferment is not counted towards the duration of compulsory school attendance.
