Notify the keeping of animals in a holding facility in an EU Member State or in a third country

Service Description

If you run a livestock farm based in another EU country or in a third country, you can obtain an identification number from the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE), which shows how the animals are kept.

With this identification number, another food company that sells food produced from your animals in Germany can apply for voluntary animal husbandry labeling, which provides end consumers with information about the way the animals are kept. Alternatively, you can use the identification number to sell your food by way of direct marketing with animal husbandry labeling.

Your business can receive an identification number if you keep fattening pigs. When registering, you must state, for example

  • How the animals are kept
  • Housing facilities with
    • Location plans if there are several housing facilities
    • Information on the usable floor area
    • Information on the number of animals kept
    • Details of the authority that monitors animal welfare requirements

The identification number is made up of

  • the identifier for the type of husbandry,
  • a unique identification number for the farm
  • a consecutive number for the housing facility and
  • an identifier for the period of validity.

The identification number is issued for a period of 2 years.

You can submit the application in German or English.
