Service Description
Farriery in Germany may only be carried out by certified and state-approved farriers. This does not apply to the practice of horse and claw shoeing by employees or trainees subject to social insurance contributions, insofar as they work under the supervision of farriers or farriers' assistants. This does not include veterinary work or work that merely involves the usual everyday cleaning and care of hooves and claws.
Hoof shoeing includes the totality of all operations performed on a hoof for the purpose of protection, health maintenance, correction or treatment. Hoof shoeing includes the totality of all operations involved in the application, repair, or removal of a shoe to the hoof of an animal when that animal is to be used as a draft, pack, or riding animal.
The specialized training at farriery schools may only be carried out by certified and state-approved farriery instructors.
Examination certificates in the field of farriery and hoof shoeing obtained outside Germany may be treated as equivalent in accordance with the Farriery Recognition Ordinance. This ordinance also regulates the procedure for state recognition for persons with equivalent examination certificates.
Process flow
- You submit the application, including the required evidence, to the competent body.
- The office checks whether all the requirements for state recognition are met
- If the examination is positive, you will be granted state recognition as an apprentice farrier.
Requirements
State recognition as a farrier apprentice blacksmith or farrier apprentice blacksmith is granted when the following requirements are met:
- the state recognition as a farrier,
- at least five years of work as a farrier,
- annual attendance at continuing education courses during this period,
- the required professional and work pedagogical knowledge and
- a successfully passed examination to become an apprentice farrier.
Which documents are required?
In the case of training completed in Germany:
- Identification document
- the state recognition as a farrier,
- at least five years of work as a farrier,
- during this period, annual attendance at continuing education courses, and
- the required professional and work pedagogical knowledge,
- a successfully passed examination to become an apprentice farrier.
For persons with examination certificates obtained outside Germany:
- Identity document,
- equivalent examination certificate,
- proof of the reliability required to exercise the profession (application for a certificate of good conduct or submission of a confirmation from the country in which the examination certificate was obtained showing that no animal welfare violations have been committed,
- at least five years of work as a farrier,
- annual attendance at continuing education courses during this period, and
- the required professional and work pedagogical knowledge.

Is based on the respective administrative fee regulations of the state or on the fee statutes of the bodies responsible under state law.

What else should I know?
Any person who intentionally or negligently practices hoof and claw shoeing as a farrier or the specialized training at farrier schools as a farrier trainer without the required state recognition is acting in violation of the regulations (§ 9 HufBeschlG).
