Reporting changes in your personal situation in the event of unemployment

Service Description

A change in your personal situation may affect your entitlement to unemployment benefit. You may receive less or more money. You must therefore report any change in your personal circumstances to your local employment agency immediately. This information is important to ensure that you receive the correct amount of benefits to which you are entitled.

In particular, you must report if you:

  • go away for a longer period of time,
  • move house,
  • take up secondary employment (including voluntary work),
  • take up a job,
  • go back to school,
  • start training or studying,
  • become self-employed,
  • go on maternity leave or parental leave,
  • draw an old-age pension,
  • draw a reduced earning capacity pension,
  • are doing an internship, voluntary service or military service,
  • have changed your name or marital status
  • become ill or recover after an illness,
  • change your tax class or
  • have another reason for deregistration.

In some cases, you should contact your local employment agency before your personal situation changes.

For example, if you take up a second job: The income from the secondary employment may affect the amount of unemployment benefit you receive.

The obligation to notify also applies to changes that may have a retroactive effect on your benefits. This is the case, for example, if you are retroactively granted a pension.

If you receive supplementary citizen's allowance in addition to unemployment benefit, you must notify the Jobcenter of the change separately. Please follow the instructions for this benefit and use the form for notifying changes if you receive citizen's allowance.
