Vehicle license plates - apply for short-term license plates for test or transfer journeys

Service Description

Short-term license plates are intended for test or transfer journeys and may only be used on one vehicle. Other driving purposes are not permitted and may be penalized.
The short-term license plate consists of a distinguishing sign and an identification number consisting of digits only and beginning with "03" or "04". The expiration date is noted on the license plate in a yellow field on the right-hand side, with the day at the top, the month below and the year underneath. The short-term license plate is valid for a maximum of five days, after which it may no longer be used and automatically loses its validity.

Short-term license plates can be issued if

  • the vehicle that is to be driven with it is known and is entered in the vehicle registration document,
  • EC type approval has been granted or an individual approval or operating license has been issued,
  • for used vehicles, proof of a valid general inspection (HU) for the vehicle is provided and
  • motor vehicle liability insurance is in place.

If these requirements are met, the vehicle may be used on public roads in Germany for up to 5 days. The period depends on the expiration date set by the registration authority.

In addition, short-term license plates may not be used by the vehicle owner or any other person on a vehicle other than the one entered in the vehicle registration document.

If the requirements regarding the operating license or the HU are not fulfilled, the usability of the vehicle is locally limited:

  • If the vehicle does not correspond to an EC type or if an individual approval has not been granted, only journeys in connection with obtaining the operating license are permitted, namely to the nearest assessment office in the district of the licensing authority that has issued the short-term license plate or an adjacent district.
  • If the date for the main inspection or safety inspection is before the expiry of the short-term license plate, only journeys to and from an inspection station in the registration district or an adjacent district are permitted without proof of the inspection and test carried out.
  • If the vehicle is not certified to be free of defects during this inspection or test, journeys for the immediate repair of any significant or minor defects found may also be made to a suitable facility in the registration district or an adjacent district. suitable facility in the registration district or a neighboring district and back.

This exception does not apply to vehicles that are classified as unsafe to drive.
