Chamber of Engineers - right to use the professional title of "engineer

Service Description

The right to use the professional title "engineer" is regulated by law, i.e. it requires the existence of legal requirements, which are specified for the Free State of Thuringia in the Thuringian Chamber of Architects and Engineers Act -ThürAIKG- of 14.12.2016.

The Thuringian Chamber of Engineers is the competent body for the Free State of Thuringia for the authorized use of the professional title "engineer".

Upon application and if the legal requirements are met, it issues a corresponding certificate of entitlement to use the professional title of "engineer".

Furthermore, it is also the responsibility of the Thuringian Chamber of Engineers to initiate administrative offence proceedings in cases of unauthorized use of the professional title "Engineer".

According to § 4 para. 1 ThürAIKG, the necessary requirements are met by anyone who has completed a course of study in a technical or scientific field at a German state or state-recognized university or university of cooperative education as well as state-recognized mining school of at least six semesters, with at least 180 credit points (ECTS) including predominantly engineering-specific subjects from the fields of mathematics, information technology, natural science, technology.

The entitlement to use the professional title "engineer" also exists in cases where an entitlement to use the aforementioned professional title already existed when the ThürAIKG came into force or was already granted under the law of another state.

If the aforementioned requirements are met, the right to use the professional title "engineer" exists without any further notification or approval requirements.
