Apply to the Federal Archives for use of images

Service Description

In the Federal Archives (BArch) you will find archive material of the Confederation on German history since the time of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.

You can

  • apply in writing or online to use images and audiovisual media from the Federal Archives.
  • Once your application has been approved, you can search for historical information and use it for the approved purpose.

Archive material includes

  • images
  • photographs
  • posters
  • maps
  • plans
  • film material
  • Sound recordings

In your application, you must state the purpose for which you wish to use the media. In addition to the application form, you must describe in as much detail as possible what you intend to use the media for.

You will then only be granted the right of use for the stated purpose after examination. You must submit a separate application for each new intended use.

After approval, you can view the media on site at the Federal Archives. If you wish to continue using the media, the Federal Archives will make you a copy. This will incur costs depending on the effort involved.

When using the Federal Archives, the provisions of the Federal Archives Act, the Federal Archives User Ordinance and the BKM Fee Ordinance must be observed. The current laws on copyright and personal rights also apply.
