Apply for animal testing projects

Service Description

To carry out experiments on vertebrates or cephalopods, you require a permit for the experimental project from the Thuringian State Office for Consumer Protection (TLV).

Animal experiments are interventions or treatments for experimental purposes

  1. on animals if they may be associated with pain, suffering or harm to these animals,
  2. on animals that may result in the birth or hatching of animals that suffer pain, suffering or harm, or
  3. on the genetic material of animals if they may be associated with pain, suffering or harm to the genetically modified animals or their carrier animals.

Animal experiments also include interventions or treatments that do not serve experimental purposes and

  • which are carried out for the production, extraction, storage or propagation of substances, products or organisms,
  • by which organs or tissues are removed in whole or in part in order to transplant the organs or tissues for scientific purposes
  1. to transplant the organs or tissues for scientific purposes,
  2. to create cultures or
  3. to examine isolated organs, tissues or cells,

or

  • which are performed for the purposes of education, training or further training, insofar as one of the conditions specified in sentence 2 numbers 1 to 3 is met.

The following shall not be considered animal experiments

  • the killing of an animal if the killing is carried out solely for the purpose of using the animal's organs or tissues for scientific purposes,
  • an intervention or treatment on a farm animal which is carried out
  1. is carried out on a holding in the context of agricultural activity and
  2. is not carried out for scientific purposes, or
  • a veterinary clinical trial that is required for the approval of a veterinary medicinal product.
