With its diversity, the Thuringian school system offers the right school for every student. The four-year elementary school forms the basis of general education. After that, the regular school is usually the right type of secondary school. In addition to a solid theoretical general education, it offers a great deal of practical life and career orientation. Following the regular school, all further educational paths - from entry into vocational training to preparation for university studies - are open. Starting in grade 5, the Gymnasium leads to the Abitur, i.e. the general university entrance qualification, in eight years with increased theoretical requirements. Special schools provide the necessary support if a child requires special educational assistance that cannot be provided at a regular school or a Gymnasium. Finally, there are transitional opportunities between the various school careers, so that in Thuringia no career decision has to be final.
