Deregister residence

Service Description

You only need to deregister your place of residence if you are not moving into another home in Germany, i.e. if you are moving abroad or giving up your secondary residence. You must deregister with the registration office within two weeks of moving out.

Persons under the age of 16 must be deregistered by the person from whose home they are moving out.

When deregistering, the person obliged to register can also send the registration form. The submission of a power of attorney is sufficient if it covers matters relating to registration law or the right to determine residence.

Spouses, life partners and family members with the same previous and future residences can use one deregistration form; it is sufficient if one of the persons obliged to register signs the registration form.

Deregistration ex officio is possible and takes place if you have not fulfilled your obligation to deregister.

If you only have one home that you are giving up and are moving into another home in Germany, it is sufficient to register at your new place of residence.

If you do not deregister within two weeks, you are committing an offense. In this case, you can be fined up to €1,000.
