Veterinary assistant - Determining the equivalence of a foreign professional qualification
Service Description
Veterinary assistants assist veterinarians in the examination, treatment and care of animals and in advising animal owners. They also perform organizational and administrative work.
You have acquired a professional qualification abroad that entitles you to comparable professional activities as the domestic training certificate as a veterinary assistant and want to work in Germany in your learned profession? The profession of veterinary assistant is a state-recognized training profession that is not regulated in Germany. If you nevertheless wish to have the equivalence with a German qualification checked, you can apply to the competent body to have the equivalence determined. The competent body will determine equivalence upon application, provided that
- the training certificate acquired abroad proves that you are qualified to perform comparable professional activities to the corresponding domestic training certificate, and
- there are no significant differences between the proven professional qualification and the corresponding domestic professional qualification.
Process flow
For the determination of equivalence, the competent body checks, on the basis of your training certificates, whether or to what extent your foreign qualification corresponds to a German qualification for the occupation you intend to practice. This review is based on specified formal criteria, such as the content and duration of the training. Your relevant professional experience is also taken into account, as are other relevant qualifications.
You can find more information about the profession of veterinary assistant, about the procedure and also about the offices responsible for this on the Internet portal "Anerkennung-in-Deutschland".
When all documents have been submitted in full, the competent body will begin the equivalence test. The decision will be made within three months after all documents have been submitted. The deadline may be reasonably extended once if this is justified due to the special nature of the matter. You will be notified of the extension in good time.
You will receive a written or electronic decision on the decision of the competent body.
An accelerated procedure is possible in the case of Section 81a of the Residence Act in conjunction with Section 14a of the Act on the Determination of the Equivalence of Professional Qualifications (Berufsqualifikationsfeststellungsgesetz - BQFG).
