Are you interested in the historical topography of Thuringia? Various historical maps can be used to trace the development of towns and municipalities or in rural areas. They bear witness to the cultural development, to the state of the science of land surveying and at the same time document the high quality of earlier cartographic work. Due to their partly very decorative design, the map sheets are also extremely popular with collectors.

Historical maps are available at the Thuringian State Office for Land Management and Geoinformation (TLBG) at scales of 1:25,000 and 1:100,000 as reprints. The field originals and original survey table sheets were kindly provided by the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Preußischer Kulturbesitz. The selection is supplemented by historical maps in special formats depicting areas of former Thuringian principalities (e.g. Schmettau's map of the Schmalkalden dominion in various scales, Reymann's special map at a scale of 1:200,000, Erfurt fortress 1813).
