The 12 tax offices of the Free State of Thuringia are responsible for assessing and collecting taxes, with the exception of municipal taxes. As state tax authorities at the local level, their areas of responsibility are delineated according to local and factual areas of competence.

A major focus of the tax office's activities is the processing of tax returns of employees and other taxpayers.

Based on the information provided in tax returns and, if necessary, other available information from employers, health insurance companies, insurers, etc., the tax office determines the basis for taxation, sets the respective taxes and collects them. Service centers are set up in the entrance areas of the tax offices as the first point of contact for almost all concerns. For example, tax returns and documents are accepted there, applications for wage tax reductions are processed and general information is provided.
