Parental allowance, parental allowance plus

Service Description

Parental Allowance (from July 1, 2015 "basic parental allowance") is paid to parents who want to devote themselves primarily to caring for their child during the first 14 months of their child's life and are therefore not gainfully employed or do not work more than 30 hours per week. Parental allowance is paid to parents who are not self-employed, self-employed and unemployed, as well as to students and trainees. Grandparents and other relatives up to the 3rd degree as well as adoptive parents are also entitled to parental allowance under certain conditions.

The Parental allowance plus can be used by all mothers and fathers of children born after July 1, 2015, who wish to draw their parental allowance for longer: One month of basic parental allowance becomes two Parental Allowance Plus months. Parental allowance plus is especially geared toward parents who want to work part-time while receiving parental allowance.

If you decide to work part-time as parents of a child born on or after July 1, 2015, you will each receive four additional months of Elterngeld Plus. To qualify, you must both work between 25 and 30 hours per week for at least four consecutive months of the child's life. You are free to decide when you want to claim the partnership bonus as part of your parental allowance reference period.

Single parents of a child born on or after July 1, 2015 who work between 25 and 30 hours per week for four consecutive months can also claim the partnership bonus. They then receive four additional parental allowance plus months.

How much is the parental allowance?

The parental allowance (from July 1, 2015 "basic parental allowance") is between 65 and 100% of the average earned income before the birth. It is generally between €300 and €1,800 per month. If income from gainful employment is also earned while receiving parental allowance, the parental allowance benefit is reduced accordingly. In the case of multiple births, there is a parental allowance entitlement. The calculated parental allowance is increased by a multiple birth supplement of €300 per month for the second and each additional multiple child. Families with two or more children can receive a sibling bonus, depending on the age of the children. This amounts to 10% of the parental allowance, but at least €75 per month.

Parental allowance plus (for children born on or after July 1, 2015) is at least 50% of the basic parental allowance. It can be paid up to the same amount but over twice the period. The decisive factor here is how much income you earn during the parental allowance. The parental allowance plus is basically between 150 € and 900 € per month.

The partnership bonus gives parents four additional months of Elterngeld Plus each.
