Protection of Sundays and public holidays - exceptions

Service Description

On Sundays and public holidays, there is generally - apart from exceptions stipulated in the Thuringian Public Holiday Act - general rest from work, and all activities are still prohibited which are likely to impair this rest or which contradict the nature of the Sunday and public holiday.

Exceptions to this may be allowed for good cause, but no disruption of religious services may occur.
In Thuringia, 10 out of 15 of the public holidays observed in the states, in some cases in different selections, are celebrated statewide. These are New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May 1, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, German Unity Day, Reformation Day, and Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Corpus Christi Day is only protected in municipalities with a predominantly Catholic resident population.

Corpus Christi:
Since there is always uncertainty about the regulation of Corpus Christi Day in Thuringia, a leaflet has been prepared on this subject, which can be viewed here.
Corpus Christi Day is a public holiday only in the municipalities or districts listed in the leaflet.
For employees, it should be noted that the law of the place of work applies to this holiday.
The same applies in relation to workplaces outside Thuringia.
