Exercise foreign professional qualifications as an interpreter

Service Description

The profession of sworn interpreter is regulated. It entitles to oral language transmission for judicial, prosecutorial and notarial purposes. The corresponding language is German. An activity as a general sworn interpreter can only be exercised after the general swearing-in by the competent president of the district court. Recognition of the foreign qualification is not required for the general swearing-in as an interpreter.

A person may be sworn in as a general interpreter if he or she has the required personal reliability and professional aptitude. Personal reliability is not given, in particular, if the applicant has been sentenced by a court or other measure, from which his/her unsuitability as a sworn interpreter results, or if the applicant lives in a disorderly financial situation. The professional aptitude must be proven by a certificate of successful completion of interpreting studies at a university or a certificate of a passed state or state-recognized interpreting examination.
